The Theory of Dabbling

Updated: Dec 31, 2025

After graduating from college, I earned my right to take part in the infamous job hunt. What this really means is constantly checking job postings, countless resume revisions, and time spent second guessing who I am and what the meaning of life is. For a lot of people, this next decision was everything. It determined how their peers might perceive them, what lifestyle they would be living, what their contribution to society was, and even their sense of identity.

Growing up, this is what sports were to me; my identity. Every decision and aspect of my life was consumed by what I did or didn't do on a field. After "pursuing academics" instead I spiraled. I was lost and I couldn't stomach not knowing who I was anymore.

Thrown into the ocean of self reflection I found and came to love the idea of dabbling. Floundering for a sense-of-self I embraced the idea of becoming a dabbler.

Similar to the "jack of trades," there can be a negative connotation that comes with the word "dabbler." One that portrays a them as someone who lacks commitment or is the "master of none." In my life, dabbling embodies the way I should be living; constantly advancing, taking on new challenges, and learning new skillsets.
